Ice cream at the beach is just one of those things that go together. Many summer memories are built over a good ice cream cone and nothing is better on a hot night than ice cream.
Fleck’s Ice Cream is one of those traditional beach ice cream places. They have been serving ice cream to tourists and locals alike in the Villas, NJ since 1993. They have become a staple in their community. Most summer nights, there is a line that goes out the front door. For our family, it is literally only a few blocks from the house Heather’s Aunt owns where we stay when we are at the beach. This makes going there very convenient as it is within walking distance. This is our take on Fleck’s Ice Cream.
The atmosphere at Fleck’s is about what one would expect for a family-owned beach ice cream parlor. There are lots of vintage ice cream themed decorations. These are sprinkled all over the walls along with a bunch of baseball themed decorations. While this may seem a little inconsistent with the theme, it seems to work for them. The dining area is a bunch of plain brown tables. I would say during the summer when the line is out the door, there is not always adequate seating available. Because of the amount of traffic that comes through there, it is not always the cleanest and the tables could use a wipe down. Rating: 3 out of 5
Overall, I would say Fleck’s is pretty kid-friendly. They have a nice ice cream counter that is long and allows your kids to look at all the ice cream flavors and candy toppings. They do offer some of the “less common” toppings like gummy worms and gummy bears which most kids love. The space is adequate enough that your family will not feel cramped while enjoying your tasty treat. One drawback is that there are no public restrooms in the establishment which can be tough with smaller kids. Other than that it is a family-friendly place that you know your children will enjoy. I would say that ice cream is one of those things that it is hard to mess up. I can probably count on one hand when I have had bad ice cream. Unfortunately, one of those times was at Fleck’s. We were there on one occasion that Heather had ordered “Moose tracks” and the ice cream had that “freezer burn” flavor. I would say that normally though, the ice cream is pretty good. The menu at the ice cream parlor is huge, with lots of flavors and toppings as well as a giant list of specialty sundaes along with water ice, soft serve, and milkshakes. It would be a challenge to bring someone in there and have them leave saying there was nothing they like. That being said, I think the sundae list is a little overwhelming, especially if it is your first time in the parlor. Rating: 3 out of 5
The pricing at Fleck’s is pretty consistent with an average tourist town ice cream place. It is not what I would call cheap, but it is definitely manageable. Keep in mind, however, that Fleck’s is cash only. They do have an ATM on-site if you do happen to forget but there is obviously a fee included. Rating: 3 out of 5
Fleck’s is a solid place to go for some ice cream or other frozen treats. It is the sort of place that we have been to many times. Because of the convenience of location along with the fact that we have had mostly good experiences, it is the sort of place we will continue to go to. If you happen to be in or around Villas, NJ, it is definitely worth a stop in. Rating: 3 out of 5
